24M's Revolutionary Battery Promises 50% More EV Range Without Size Increase
A Massachusetts-based company, 24M Technologies, has developed a revolutionary electric car battery. The new battery, using an electrode-to-pack (ETOP) arrangement, promises up to 50% more range without increasing size. This breakthrough could significantly impact the electric vehicle market.
The ETOP battery eliminates conventional battery structures, reducing inactive materials and increasing energy density. This is achieved by sealing each electrode in a thin polymer film, allowing for 80% of the battery's volume to be made up of electrodes, compared to the 30% to 60% in traditional packs. This innovative design allows for increased capacity while occupying the same physical space, making it cheaper to build.
The ETOP approach can be used in various battery chemistries, including NMC, LFP, NCA, sodium, and traditional lithium ion packs. The polymer cells offer more flexibility in shape, facilitating various applications and spaces. Vehicle manufacturers can incorporate these batteries with modest capex investments, due to their similarity to conventional battery structures.
The first ETOP prototypes are complete and undergoing evaluation, with the technology nearing production-readiness. This new battery technology, developed by 24M Technologies, could lead to longer-range electric vehicles without increasing size or significantly impacting production costs.
