£70M PET Plastic Recycling Plant to Open in Northwest England by 2027
A new PET plastic recycling plant is set to open in Northwest England, backed by a £70 million investment from Veolia. The facility, operated by Enviroo, is expected to process 80,000 tonnes of mixed plastics annually, contributing to the UK's net zero ambitions.
Enviroo, in collaboration with RECOUP, has announced plans for the plant, which is anticipated to be operational by 2027. Located at Peel NRE's Protos Plastic Park at Ince Marshes, near Ellesmere Port, the facility aims to recycle PET plastics into high-quality food-grade packaging materials.
The plant is expected to process up to 35,000 tonnes of plastic annually, significantly reducing plastic waste. The European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) has supported this initiative by promoting bottle-to-bottle recycling for PET. Enviroo's market due diligence led to the securing of £58m in funding, with North East Recycling Ltd acting as the financer.
The new PET plastic recycling plant, with its £70 million investment from Veolia, is set to create sustainable jobs in the green economy while helping the UK achieve its net zero targets. The plant's anticipated annual processing capacity of 80,000 tonnes of mixed plastics is a significant step towards a more circular economy.
