Account balances surpass anticipated levels
The city of Graz has closed the 2024 financial year with a significant improvement, surpassing the originally planned value by almost 88 million euros. This positive development is a result of prudent budgeting and increased revenues from various sources.
The surge in revenues can be attributed to a 1.3 million euro increase in parking fees, a 2.2 million euro rise in property taxes, and a 2 million euro surplus in fee revenues, particularly for wastewater (+1.2 million euros) and waste disposal (+0.6 million euros).
The investment in central areas of public infrastructure in the previous year amounted to 314.3 million euros. Higher revenues from own taxes also contributed to the deviation from the planned budget, with a surplus of 4.2 million euros.
Finance Councillor Manfred Eber (KPÖ) has stated that the budget has been honestly balanced and socially acceptable measures have been implemented. However, he urged the federal and state governments to provide clarity for municipalities, as sustainable budget planning is becoming increasingly difficult without reliable framework conditions.
Looking ahead, the city budget for 2025 and 2026 was presented by the responsible officials of the city administration. The budget presentation did not specify the exact person who presented it, but it is expected that the debt level will increase to 2.54 billion euros by 2030.
This positive financial situation comes at a time when the city of Graz closed the 2024 financial year with an operating cash flow of -16.6 million euros, significantly better than the originally forecasted value. The city administration will now focus on maintaining this momentum and ensuring a continued positive impact on the city's financial health.
