Agribusiness Achievement in Haryana: Sukhjeet Singh Amasses 1 Crore Rupees in Farming Venture, Motivating Over 600 Farmers
Meet Sukhjeet Singh, a trailblazing agricultural maverick hailing from the modest lands of Haryana's Sirsa district. Born into a family of humble farmers, he worked tirelessly alongside his parents as they toiled the earth, growing crops like wheat, mustard, cotton, and bajra using traditional methods. Despite their relentless efforts, the financial rewards were meager. But the die was cast - a passion for agriculture ripened within him.
Choosing to forge his destiny in agrarian lands, Sukhjeet embarked on a mission to revolutionize the way farming was approached. His ambition: to prove that agriculture, when embraced with ingenuity, could generate substantial income while maintaining dignity.
Cultivating a New Harvest
In 2015, Sukhjeet's farming career underwent a profound transformation. He shifted his focus to horticulture, sowing kinnow on 25 acres and guava on 8 acres of his land. Driven by his commitment to a sustainable future and the attractive income potential of fruit crops, this move was a bold step forward. The initial years were filled with challenges: high initial investments, technical hurdles, and skepticism abounded. But Sukhjeet, undeterred, pressed on with unwavering determination.
As the years passed, Sukhjeet's perseverance paid off. His lands bloomed with quality produce that delighted consumers with their taste and freshness. This success bolstered his confidence and laid the groundwork for expanding his horticulture-based agribusiness.
Sowing the Seeds of a Green Revolution
Recently, Sukhjeet added organic wheat and millets to his cropping rotation. He supports fellow farmers in adopting natural farming methods and advocates for crop rotation, which significantly reduces costs and improves overall productivity. This multi-crop approach is not just economic but also nourishing, with farmers growing healthier food and consumers enjoying the benefits. Through these efforts, Sukhjeet strives to promote sustainable agriculture and encourages others to follow in his footsteps.
From Humble Farmer to Agripreneur
By 2018, Sukhjeet took the plunge and registered his own Farmer Producer Company (FPO)-Acrefarm Farmer Producer Company. Through this FPO, he began processing, packaging, and branding organic commodities such as atta, dal, mustard oil, desi ghee, and more under the brand name Sirsa Natural.
Initially supplying produce to cities like Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, Sukhjeet expanded his reach by sourcing not only from his farm but also from other local farmers. This collaboration helped farmers access better markets and reap higher incomes. As demand grew among health-conscious consumers, he ventured into direct-to-consumer vegetable sales in urban areas like Delhi, Chandigarh, and Punjab, utilizing internet platforms and social media.
Now, his business boasts a turnover of approximately Rs. 3 crore. He has provided employment for 12 rural youth and indirectly supported the livelihoods of over 600 farmers from nearby villages, many of whom have adopted organic farming methods after witnessing Sukhjeet's success.
Walking in Two Worlds
Despite his remarkable achievements, Sukhjeet is quick to acknowledge that he is still, first and foremost, a farmer. He spends hours tending his fields, engages with local farmer groups, and believes that the future of agriculture resides in nature-based farming, community education, and direct market access.
"Agriculture has provided me with everything: identity, livelihood, and inner peace. If we treat the land with respect, the land will reciprocate with respect," he says with conviction. His story is not merely one of success but of rekindling faith in agriculture, empowering rural youth, and proving that a farmer can also be a successful entrepreneur.
