AIEI Marks Milestone: First Executive Council Meeting in 1974

On April 24, 1974, the Association of Indian Engineering Industry (AIEI) held its first Executive Council meeting, marking a significant step in the evolution of Indian industry. The meeting, chaired by Mr. P K Nanda as President and Tarun Das as Secretary, laid the groundwork for the AIEI's journey to shape India's development.

The AIEI was formed through the merger of the Indian Engineering Association (IEA) and the Engineering Association of India (EAI). A single Steering Committee, headed by the President, Vice President, and Regional Chairmen, replaced the previous committees. This committee was responsible for major policy decisions, financial matters, and staff issues.

The AIEI began with 19 guidelines, known as the Panchsheel, to define its spirit and operations. Despite the merger, the specialized sectors of IEA and EAI continued as separate divisions. The AIEI was registered as a charitable organization, eligible for tax exemption, but had to appeal to confirm this status.

To maintain a strong grassroots presence, the AIEI adopted a Federal Structure with Regional Offices, Regional Councils, State Councils, and Zonal Councils. One of the key guidelines was the AIEI's commitment to deal with any government in power, maintaining a non-partisan stance.

The first meeting of the AIEI's Executive Council set the stage for the organization's role in shaping Indian industry and development. With its clear structure, guidelines, and commitment to non-partisanship, the AIEI began its journey to influence and support the engineering industry in India.
