Alberta Unveils New Oil Pipeline to BC, Backed by Enbridge and Trans Mountain

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has announced plans for a new oil pipeline to northwestern British Columbia. The project, backed by a technical advisory group including Enbridge Inc., Trans Mountain Corp., and South Bow Corp., aims to unlock Canada's full economic potential. The province is investing $14 million in early planning work, with a submission expected in the spring of next year.

The project, led by a private company named Steelhead LNG pending Alberta government approval, will determine the pipeline's path, size, and costs. Early engagement with indigenous nations is a key priority, with Dale Swampy, president of the National Coalition of Chiefs, expressing support for the project's engagement with indigenous communities. Fort McKay Chief Raymond Powder emphasized the importance of true partnership, respecting indigenous lands, and ensuring people share in the benefits. The application will be submitted to the federal Major Projects Office to speed up developments deemed in the national interest.

The Alberta government's $14 million investment in the planning work signals a commitment to moving the project management forward. With employee engagement from indigenous co-ownership, partnership, and perspectives critical to every stage of development, the pipeline project seeks to foster a spirit of collaboration and mutual benefit.
