Hustling and Hitting: The Return of Maxfli, the People's Golf Brand

Sean Foley, a golf instructor known for boasting a roster of golf greats like Tiger Woods, Lydia Ko, and Justin Rose, finds himself full-circle as the latest brand ambassador for Maxfli, the century-old golf brand he used to resell rogue balls as a kid.

The 121-year-old brand, originally named after its founder Robert H. Maxwell, was renowned for manufacturing top-tier golf balls. Foley reminisces about his childhood pastime of scouring the course for Maxfli balls, selling them in the parking lot like hot dogs at Shea Stadium.

Maxfli's popularity extended beyond amateur circles, gaining recognition among professional players witnessed by Foley during his time as a caddy at the Canadian Open.

Nowadays, Maxfli's iconic name is making a comeback, returning to prominence with a fresh approach. The brand, which once diversified into golf bags, clubs, and accessories, has been acquired, sold, and reacquired, leading to a confusing identity.

But over the last few years, Maxfli has found its footing again. A series of strategic moves propelled the brand back into the limelight. First came the signing of Lexi Thompson (LPGA) and Ben Griffin (PGA Tour) as brand ambassadors. In October 2024, Maxfli collaborated with Metalwood Studio for an out-of-the-blue apparel capsule collection.

Moreover, Maxfli unveiled its latest generation of golf balls, including the Tour, Tour X, and Tour S, and announced its first golf clubs in over three decades with the XC2 and XC3 forged irons. Forged from 1025 carbon steel with co-forged tungsten and ceramic weighting, the XC2 and XC3 are designed for varying skill levels, targeting both experienced players and those seeking improvement.

The XC2's thinner topline aims to offer more precision and control, catering to players seeking finesse. On the other hand, the XC3 features a wider sole, offering greater forgiveness and distance, ideal for those who need a helping hand with consistency. Both sets are set to launch exclusively at Dick's Sporting Goods and Golf Galaxy on April 18 for $999.99 for seven clubs (4-PW).

Brand Manager Sara Scarlett shares that the product development team worked tirelessly to ensure the new irons were the best possible version before hitting the market. Maxfli is also covertly working on expanding its product line to fill potential voids in the golf market.

Regardless of the direction Maxfli chooses to take, their commitment to quality and a fair price remains unwavering. Product Development Associate Quinn Sliker explains, "We're always looking at how we can elevate Maxfli, making it more premium, yet truly accessible."

Time will tell what Maxfli has up its sleeve next, but one thing's for sure — the brand is back, and it's here to stay. As Foley puts it, "Maxfli offers high-quality products for less, focusing on helping people improve their game without breaking the bank."
