Anurag Thakur Assumes Position as Minister of State for Finance and Business Affairs
Anurag Thakur, a prominent figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has taken on a significant role in the Government of India. On July 7, 2019, he was sworn in as the Union Minister of State for Finance & Corporate Affairs, and on July 29, 2021, his portfolio expanded to include Youth Affairs and Sports as well.
Born on October 24, 1974, in Himachal Pradesh, Thakur began his political career in 1998 when he was elected as a Member of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He went on to serve the state for four terms, first in May 2008, and again in the 14th, 15th, and 16th Lok Sabha elections.
In 2014, Thakur was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) to the 16th Lok Sabha from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, a seat he has since retained in the 2019 and 2020 elections. Prior to his ministerial role, he served as the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports from 2014 to 2019.
Thakur's political career has seen him rise through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from May 2016 to February 2017. He also held the position of BJP National General Secretary. In 2013, he became the President of the BJP in Himachal Pradesh.
The charge was taken in the presence of Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman. Thakur was also greeted by Revenue Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CBDT Chairperson Pramod Chandra Mody, and CBIC Chairperson Pranab Kumar Das.
Thakur completed his bachelor's education from Doaba College, Jalandhar, Punjab, and is married to Seema Thakur with whom he has two children. He is a regular commissioned Officer in the Territorial Army, having become the first serving BJP Member of Parliament to achieve this milestone in June 2016.
Thakur's portfolio as Union Minister includes Information and Broadcasting, and Youth Affairs and Sports. His political career continues to be marked by significant contributions and influential roles at both the state and national levels.
