Brace yourself, Home Depot shoppers, as the company prepares to shut down nearly 160 stores across the globe. Many found this scale unforeseen, but the mass closure is now an unfortunate reality.

Troubled Times: Some Stores' End Was Already Predicted

News of the looming closures first surfaced last year, following which many stores started to shutter. As customers walked into empty stores with barren shelves and dimmed lights, the gravity of the situation became all too real. By the end of last year, 43 stores in our home country had closed. Spring saw an additional 45 stores shuttering, and another 54 followed by May, leaving only half of the stores operational and 158 closed. This undoubtedly has left a significant void not just here but also in Austria (now 27 stores left) and Switzerland (no stores remain). The gloomy forecast has resulted in a staggering loss of 2,000 out of the 3,300 jobs. But here's some good news.

Ray of Hope: What Management Plans Next

The primary reason for the closures is intense competition from Chinese giants like AliExpress, Temu, Shein, and other non-food discounters like Woolworth, Action, Kik, Tedi, and more. The home decor industry has become a flooded market with an excess of cheap suppliers. Traditionally, Depot was a go-to for holiday shopping, but that wasn't enough anymore.

The management, however, has new strategies up its sleeve. The company aims to compete on its own terms, said the manager, by collaborating with Chinese manufacturers. Initially, they will produce trendy items in small quantities for online sales, with the intention of expanding to physical retail if successful. Additionally, the Ipuro fragrance brand is being transformed into a standalone cosmetics brand, while the decor range will cater to the entire home, not just a single season.

This strategic move showcases Home Depot's determination to stand tall amid retail sector turbulence and grow alongside the booming $500 billion home improvement market. By concentrating on prime locations, establishing a strong e-commerce infrastructure, and offering improved services, Home Depot is poised to thrive rather than perish.

Amidst the ongoing closure of over 150 Home Depot stores worldwide, the finance sector is closely watching the retail business as it faces intense competition from Chinese giants like AliExpress, Temu, Shein, and other non-food discounters. In response, management is strategizing to compete on their terms, aiming to collaborate with Chinese manufacturers for online sales and expanding into physical retail, while also rebranding the Ipuro fragance brand and extending the decor range to cater to the entire home.
