Approximately one in ten Russian employers consider an applicant's physical appearance during the hiring process.
In a recent survey, involving 350 employers across Russia, it was discovered that numerous factors play a crucial role in the hiring process.
First and foremost, it's evident that education and professional qualifications are highly regarded, with half of the Russian population aged 25 to 64 boasting higher education degrees. Employers keenly appreciate degrees obtained from well-respected Russian universities, which have international recognition, setting job candidates apart[3].
Beyond formal qualifications, employers pay attention to candidates' work experience, professional skills, and the unique qualities that make them stand out. Communication, organizational skills, and a positive attitude towards colleagues are emphasized, as are strategic thinking and career planning[5].
Interestingly, while university degrees and related experience are essential, appearance also creeps into the hiring equation. Almost 90% of respondents pay heed to a candidate's appearance and grooming, while 54% focus on facial expression, 38% on hairstyle, and 35% on their clothing. Approximately 25% notice makeup and facial hygiene, but just 10% disregard it entirely[1].
However, when it comes to specific annoyances, 90% of employers are turned off by unpleasant odors or uncleanliness, 86% by sloppiness, 44% by a lack of smile or hostile facial expression, and 38% by excessive eccentricity. Piercings bother 36%, and visible tattoos discourage 27% of respondents[1].
