Aurubis enhances shaft furnace at Avellino facility to elevate copper wire rod manufacture output
Aurubis Upgrades Shaft Furnace at Avellino Site, Boosting Copper Wire Production
Aurubis AG, a leading global provider of non-ferrous metals and one of the world's largest copper recyclers, has recently upgraded a shaft furnace at its Avellino site in Italy. This significant investment secures an advanced supply of copper wire, a key material for digital infrastructure, energy transition, electrification, and e-mobility.
The modernization of the shaft furnace includes a taller furnace shaft, a new furnace shell, updated refractory lining, an optimized charging system, and groundwork for a future-ready burner and combustion setup. The upgrade increases the production capacity by about 20%.
Tim Kurth, Chief Operations Officer for Custom Smelting and Products, emphasized that this investment secures an advanced supply of copper wire, a key product for major transformation trends, and plays a decisive role in strengthening Europe's competitiveness.
The full capacity increase of the Avellino plant will take effect following the second phase, scheduled for August 2026. This phase will include a new natural gas combustion system, increasing energy efficiency and lowering specific gas consumption by up to 10%.
Aurubis is committed to making decarbonization initiatives and energy solutions a basis for its modernized production processes. The upgraded shaft furnace is highly energy-efficient, aligning with the company's commitment to sustainability.
The modernization of the Avellino plant is a major milestone in the site's history. Aurubis Avellino is the first company in Italy to begin the process of obtaining The Copper Mark certification for its site. The Copper Mark is an internationally renowned and independent assurance framework to promote responsible practices across the copper value chain.
Aurubis is committed to expanding its leading role in sustainability and making its Italian rod plant future-proof. The company aims to reinforces its role as a reliable partner for the wire and cable industry, particularly in Southern Europe and North Africa. The expansion of wire rod production secures supply across these key markets.
Despite the search results not providing information about which company modernized the shaft-furnace plant at the Avellino site in 2025, it is clear that Aurubis AG has made a substantial investment in the upgrade, amounting to approximately €5 million.
The boost in copper wire rod production will undoubtedly contribute to the digital infrastructure, energy transition, electrification, and e-mobility sectors, further solidifying Aurubis's position as a key player in these industries.
