Austrians Lack Preparedness for Power Outage Scenarios

Unprepared Austrians in the Face of a Blackout

!Prepping up for the unexpected

Imagine Austria, a country known for its stunning landscapes and rich culture, plunged into darkness—a scenario reminiscent of Marc Elsberg's "Blackout". Sounds like a thrilling movie plot, right? But, the harsh reality is that the majority of Austrians would be as unprepared as a soap opera character in such a situation.

Recently, Real Estate Yield AG conducted a survey with 1,000 Austrians aged 16 to 75 regarding their preparations for a potential blackout. The findings? Well, let's just say they revealed that many Austrians are not quite Captain Prepared.

Headlines blare: "Austrians Unprepared for Blackout"

!(9% consider it a conspiracy theory!?)

While 48% of Austrians have prepped privately or at work with basic necessities like candles, food, and water supplies, the remaining 52% are taking a more laid-back approach. A third keep a battery radio handy, while some tech-savvy respondents invest in photovoltaic panels and water purification equipment. Interestingly, 7% have even taken a self-defense course, suggesting some prepare for the worst in case of conflicts. However, the alarming takeaway is that 9% of Austrians believe a blackout is nothing more than a conspiracy theory!

Willing to Cut Corners

Amidst rising energy prices and increasing network charges, 46% of Austrians have decided to embrace frugality by cutting back on heating costs. This frugal attitude extends beyond the winter of 2024, as over 48% exhibited the same mindset in the previous year. It's important to note that the younger the respondents, the more likely they are to embrace the cold, with 61% in Vienna showing a remarkable willingness to forego cozy warmth.

The bottom line? The chilly winter air will be catering to more Austrians than a 7-course banquet this year. So grab your warmest sweaters and mittens, and huddle up, Austria! After all, a warm home is swiftly becoming a luxury for many.

  2. Contrastingly, a concerning percentage of Austrians (9%) within various industries, including finance, remain unaware or dismissive of potential energy-related issues like blackouts, exhibiting a lack of preparedness and understanding.
