Bank of America Hit by Second Data Breach in 2023, Affecting 57,000 Customers

Bank of America has disclosed another data breach, the second this year, affecting nearly 57,000 customers. The breach, which occurred in early November, exposed sensitive personal and financial information. The LockBit ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

On November 3, 2023, unauthorized access was gained to systems belonging to Infosys McCamish Systems (IMS), a service provider for Bank of America. The breach exposed names, addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, and financial details of approximately 57,028 individuals.

The LockBit ransomware group, a notorious ransomware-as-a-service group, has claimed responsibility for the breach. They encrypted over 2,000 systems during the attack. This is not the first time Bank of America has faced a data breach in 2023. In May, an incident involving Ernst & Young's MOVEit Transfer platform also compromised customer data.

Bank of America has alerted affected customers and is offering credit monitoring services. The LockBit ransomware group's involvement highlights the ongoing threat of ransomware attacks to businesses and their customers. This is the second such incident for Bank of America in 2023, underscoring the importance of robust cybersecurity measures.
