BBVA Joins Forces with Bitstamp and Robinhood to Offer Cryptocurrency Trading for Individual Clients in Retail

In a groundbreaking move, BBVA, one of Spain's leading banks, has partnered with Bitstamp, a subsidiary of Robinhood, to offer retail customers in Spain the ability to buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies directly through the BBVA app. This partnership makes BBVA the first traditional bank in Spain to offer direct cryptocurrency services to retail customers.

The collaboration between BBVA and Bitstamp sees the creation of a centralized crypto-asset trading desk, supported by Bitstamp's infrastructure and integrated with BBVA's Foreign Exchange technology. This integration ensures a seamless and secure experience for retail investors, without the need to navigate multiple platforms.

Bitstamp provides the underlying liquidity infrastructure for BBVA's new service, ensuring a secure and regulated trading platform. The partnership reflects Bitstamp by Robinhood's ongoing commitment to helping traditional financial institutions offer crypto services with confidence.

With this partnership, everyday BBVA customers can engage in crypto trading and custody services conveniently within their existing banking environment. The service operates under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework, providing investor protection and compliance.

The partnership eliminates barriers often present in other banking crypto services, such as high minimum deposits or accredited investor restrictions, thus broadening access to digital assets. It offers a seamless and secure way to invest in Bitcoin and Ethereum backed by BBVA’s established banking reputation and Bitstamp’s regulated crypto infrastructure.

Luis Martins, Head of Global Macro Trading at BBVA, stated that the bank is expanding its digital asset offerings to meet client needs. The Bitstamp BBVA Partnership makes major cryptocurrencies accessible to Spanish retail investors through the BBVA app.

Žiga Kraševec, Head of Business Development EMEA at Bitstamp by Robinhood, expressed pride in supporting BBVA's crypto venture and providing liquidity and security. The launch of BBVA's crypto services is another step towards bringing crypto services into traditional banking.

BBVA's new crypto services are now fully operational and ready to serve clients with institutional-grade execution. The services are designed to meet applicable standards for safety and compliance, further strengthening BBVA's commitment to its customers' security. This partnership between BBVA and Bitstamp by Robinhood bridges the gap between fintech and traditional finance, paving the way for a more integrated future in the digital asset market.
