Berlin Businessman Sentenced for Wage Theft, Ordered to Pay €1.2M
A Berlin business owner has been sentenced to two years' imprisonment, suspended, for withholding and misappropriating wages in 46 cases. The Regional Court also ordered him to pay 1.2 million EUR in damages and confiscated the same amount. The business owner, who operated several businesses in the cleaning and construction sectors, failed to provide corresponding services for which he received payments totaling 1.2 million EUR between September 2016 and February 2021. To conceal this black work, he used fictitious invoices created by so-called service companies. Additionally, he did not fully pay social security contributions for his employed workers. The Frankfurt Zoll financial office investigated 46 cases of delayed and misused wages, but the operator responsible for these issues remains unknown. The business owner has been ordered to pay 1.2 million EUR in damages and the same amount has been confiscated. His imprisonment is suspended, pending good behaviour. This ruling serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of wage theft and tax evasion.
