Berlin & Hamburg Canal Renovations Begin: Minimal Traffic Disruptions Expected

Preparations are underway for trenchless canal renovations in Berlin and Hamburg, with work currently taking place in Ardeystraße, Märkische Straße, and Fritz-Reuter-Straße. The slip-lining method, which minimises traffic disruptions, is being employed to modernise the canal network.

The Drainage of our city portal (ESW) is responsible for these annual maintenance and modernisation efforts. In Ardeystraße, a 450-meter slip-liner with a 250-300mm diameter is being inserted. Meanwhile, in Märkische Straße, an 80-meter slip-liner with a 300mm diameter is being inserted, and in Fritz-Reuter-Straße, a 40-meter slip-liner with a 250mm diameter is being inserted. Residents may notice a slight, non-harmful odor during the work.

The slip-lining method involves inserting new pipes into existing ones through existing manhole covers. Residents are advised not to park near marked manhole covers during working hours to ensure safety and allow for smooth progress.

The slip-lining method is expected to cause minimal disruption to traffic, with only a few vehicles typically affected. The work is part of the ESW's ongoing efforts to maintain and modernise Witten's canal network, ensuring its functionality and longevity.
