Berlin's Left and Greens Slam Social Ticket Price Hike as 'Unfair' and 'Climate-Damaging'
The Left and the Greens in Berlin have slammed the recent price hike of the Berlin-Ticket S, deeming it 'socially unfair' and 'climatically fatal'. The discounted local transport ticket for those receiving social security benefits has seen a significant increase, sparking criticism and a planned motion in the city's parliament.
The price of the Berlin-Ticket S has jumped from 9 euros to 19 euros in April 2025, a move that has drawn heavy criticism. The Left faction has announced a motion to be submitted on 9 October 2025, calling for a more affordable social security ticket. The Greens in Berlin have thrown their support behind this motion, stressing the importance of the social security ticket for mobility and equal opportunities.
The annual fee for resident parking in Berlin is approximately a third of the new price for the Berlin-Ticket S. This stark contrast has not gone unnoticed by critics. Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe of the SPD, however, expressed pride that the social security ticket is available as a voluntary service of the state, despite tight budget resources and savings requirements. The senator did not elaborate on the reasons behind the price increase.
The price of the Berlin-Ticket S is set to increase again in January 2026, reaching 27.50 euros. This will make it three times as expensive as it was a year ago. The Left and the Greens in Berlin continue to advocate for a more affordable social security ticket, with a motion planned for the plenary session on 9 October 2025.
