Berlin's Lichtenberg to Gain 2,000 New Apartments in Major Projects
Two major housing projects are set to transform an eight-hectare site in Berlin's Lichtenberg district. Together, they aim to build a total of 2,000 new apartments, making them among the largest such projects in the city.
The 'Weiße Taube' project, planned by the Catholic Schulzentrum Edith Stein and developed by the Dutch Van Caem Group, is expected to contribute around 1,600 of these new apartments. This project, adjacent to 'Ferdinand's Garden', is still in the planning phase and will also include commercial space and a kindergarten.
The 'Ferdinand's Garden' project, currently underway, is set to deliver 378 rental apartments by the end of 2023. Started in 2020, this project has already begun addressing the city's housing shortage. Among these apartments, 78 will be at controlled rents, providing more affordable housing options.
With the completion of these two projects, the Lichtenberg district will see a significant increase in its housing stock. However, local politicians have raised concerns about the lack of school places, highlighting the need for infrastructure to keep pace with this residential growth.
