Biking Spectacle Spans over 40 Kilometers within Rödinghausen Municipality
In the picturesque town of Rödinghausen, the Herford district recently conducted its sixth bike traffic inspection on September 12, 2025. The event, part of the district's regular traffic inspections, attracted a group of experts from various organisations, including the Road Traffic Office, the Business Area Traffic Routes and Green Spaces of the district, the police, Landesbetrieb Straßenbau NRW, and the municipality of Rödinghausen.
The inspection focused on several key areas. Experts evaluated the visibility and stability of traffic signs, the condition of the roads and paths, height differences between the roadway and the shoulder, possible restrictions of the field of vision, and other factors. Additionally, they inspected bike locations throughout the route, which included Bruchmühlen, Ostkilver, Schwenningdorf, and Bieren.
The route began at the Haus des Gastes at Pemberville Platz 1 in Rödinghausen, covering a total distance of 40 kilometres. The purpose of the inspection was to ensure the preservation and expansion of the intermunicipal bicycle network, providing maximum riding comfort and safety for cyclists.
Uwe Nolte, responsible for traffic safety, accident commission, and traffic-directing measures at the Road Traffic Office, explained the inspection process. He highlighted the importance of these inspections in maintaining the district's reputation as a bike-friendly area.
Cyclists in the Herford district find very good conditions, as it has been admitted to the "Working Group of pedestrian- and bicycle friendly cities, municipalities, and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia e. V." (AGFS NRW). Safety measures such as the elimination of accident hotspots, the installation of digital dialogue displays (speed displays), and the newly established bike traffic inspections were decisive criteria for the district's admission to AGFS NRW.
The Herford district has also established a cycling safety training programme for pedelec and e-bike users, in cooperation with the district sports association and the police. This initiative aims to promote safe bicycle practices and reduce accidents on the district's roads and paths.
The share of pedelecs, e-bikes, and cargo bicycles has significantly increased in the Herford district. The district's bike traffic inspections cover bicycle paths on municipal, district, federal, and state roads, ensuring that all cyclists can enjoy a safe and enjoyable riding experience.
Following the inspection, the police authority in the Herford district will develop necessary measures based on the results. This typically involves the local police department, as indicated by similar actions carried out by the police in nearby districts like Gütersloh, who implement preventive and repressive measures for traffic safety.
The Herford district continues to prioritise the safety and comfort of its cyclists, making it an attractive destination for those who prefer two wheels over four.
