BMW's New Hungary Plant Pioneers Green Production

BMW Group has inaugurated its new vehicle manufacturing plant in Debrecen, Hungary. This plant is a pioneer, being the first in the BMW Group's global network to use only renewable electricity for its regular operations.

The Debrecen plant will commence series production of the BMW iX3, the first vehicle from the Neue Klasse, by late October. The iX3 showcases the latest design and technology innovations that will define BMW's entire model range in the future.

The decision to build the plant was made in 2018, triggering one of the largest greenfield investments in Hungary. The plant was designed using virtual planning methods and constructed according to the BMW iFACTORY principles. Between now and 2027, the technologies in the Neue Klasse will be integrated into 40 new models and model updates.

The Debrecen plant will be the initial one among the company's global facilities to start the mass production of the company's Gen6 high-voltage batteries. These batteries are developed and produced by BMW itself, specifically by the BMW Battery Division within the company. The production processes were initially developed and tested at pilot plants, with artificial intelligence and data analytics playing a key role in the ramp-up of production.

The Debrecen plant, powered solely by renewable electricity, marks a significant step in BMW's commitment to sustainability. It will produce the innovative BMW iX3 and, later, the Gen6 high-voltage batteries, demonstrating BMW's dedication to cutting-edge technology and green production.
