Bodo Middeldorf will serve as the sole head in the organization
In a significant shift, Dr. Markus Böhme has been appointed as the new CEO of the Future Agency Rheinisches Revier, following the departure of Ralph Sterck. Böhme, a renowned legal expert in national and international energy law, is known for his extensive experience in advising on regulatory issues, energy transactions, and financing. He is widely recognised as a leading lawyer in energy law in Germany [2].
Prior to his current role, Sterck led the Innovation Region Rheinisches Revier. Under his leadership, the Economic and Structural Program in versions 1.0 and 1.1 were laid, providing the programmatic foundation for current funding programs such as "Unternehmen Revier," "Sofortprogramm Plus," "Starterpaket Kernrevier," and "Revier gestalten." The Future Agency, under Sterck's leadership, was tasked with distributing these funds.
Sterck's tenure at the Innovation Region Rheinisches Revier saw the acceleration of the end of coal mining and the implementation of a €14.8 billion funding program. He also grew the original team of six to 50 "Future Agents."
Meanwhile, Bodo Middeldorf, who has extensive experience in regional development and economic promotion, will take over sole management of the institution responsible for structural change following the phase-out of coal. Middeldorf, a member of the North Rhine-Westphalia state parliament since 2017, serves on the Transport and Economic Affairs Committee. He is also his faction's spokesperson for structural policy and transport.
Middeldorf previously served as CEO of the Bergische Struktur- und Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH from 2008 to 2017. Sterck, on the other hand, is set to join the Ministry of Economy, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia as head of department from November 1, 2021.

Böhme's extensive experience in financing will be beneficial in managing the future business operations and financial decisions of the Future Agency Rheinisches Revier. With the departure of Ralph Sterck, the new CEO Böhme will also oversee the distribution of funding programs such as "Unternehmen Revier," "Sofortprogramm Plus," "Starterpaket Kernrevier," and "Revier gestalten."
The upcoming role of Bodo Middeldorf, who has experience in regional development and economic promotion, will involve managing an institution responsible for structural change following the phase-out of coal. His role in the Transport and Economic Affairs Committee and as the spokesperson for structural policy and transport will likely prove valuable in this new position.
