Brand Impersonation Attacks Surge: 272,000 Incidents in H1 2022

Brand impersonation attacks have surged, with 272,000 incidents targeting tech companies in the first half of 2022, a significant increase from the 139,000 recorded in all of 2021. Gmail login and Outlook email accounts remain the top targets for cybercriminals due to the prevalence of hybrid work environments.

The Mimecast State of Email Security 2022 Report (also known as SOES 2022) was published in May 2022. Organizations are urged to maintain email hygiene and safety by using strong passwords, being cautious of every gmail and hotmail email, avoiding impersonation scams, reporting suspicious emails, and scanning attachments and links. The report highlights that 89% of Australian businesses are preparing for the impact of an email-borne attack, emphasizing the importance of robust social security measures and email security posture.

With brand impersonation attacks on the rise, organizations must prioritize email security. The Mimecast State of Email Security 2022 Report underscores the need for strong cybersecurity measures, including the use of cloud-based email security solutions.
