Bremen Transport Disrupted: Bridge Closure Causes Major Port Delays
A recent ship accident has severely disrupted transport in the Bremen and Bremerhaven region. The railway bridge over the Hunte in Elsfleth is closed, affecting multiple ports and causing widespread traffic issues. The A27 highway is also closed, further exacerbating the situation.
The bridge closure has led to a backlog in authorities issuing permits for heavy transport to continue to Bremerhaven. This has caused significant delays and rerouting, with new detours not designed for heavy traffic. Two major ports, Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven, are now cut off from the hinterland.
The Hunte is closed to shipping for an indefinite period, at least several weeks. This has led BLG to offer free capacities in the Neustädter Hafen in Bremen to affected ports. The BLG Group employs over 8,100 people in the region, many of whom are affected by these infrastructure issues. The Neustädter Hafen, with its reliable rail connection to the double-track main line, is providing much-needed relief.
The ferry service between Bremerhaven and Nordenham has been suspended due to repair work, further impacting BLG employees. The A27 is fully closed between Bremen and Bremerhaven due to a dilapidated culvert, adding to the transport chaos.
While there are no permanently cut-off ports due to the bridge damage, the region is facing significant transport disruptions. Authorities are working to issue permits and reroute traffic, while BLG is providing alternative port facilities. The full extent of the impact on the region's economy remains to be seen.
