Bridge of Carola: Decision on New Construction Expected by Summer
Dresden Planning for Timely Replacement of Carol Bridge
The city council of Dresden is set to make a principal decision on the replacement of the Carol Bridge before the end of summer. The proposed solution is a new construction that aims to restore the Elbe crossing promptly, modernly, and sustainably.
"The Carol Bridge is essential for our city," said Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP). He emphasized the need for a swift agreement on a process to restore the river connection as quickly as possible.
A legal opinion commissioned by the city concluded that a replacement new construction would allow for the creation of a future-proof bridge for Dresden. The opinion specifies the adjustments possible without an extensive planning approval procedure, while other conditions apply independently of the procedure, such as the elimination of additional pillars in the Elbe area.
Europe-wide tendering for planning and construction services is planned, with the goal of finding optimum designs for the new Carol Bridge and involving citizens in the process. A planning approval procedure for a fresh design bridge would take more than five years and become increasingly expensive. The city currently estimates the construction costs at around 140 million euros.
The western traffic lane of the Elbe crossing unexpectedly collapsed over approximately 100 meters in length on the night of September 11, 2024. Since then, the bridge from GDR times has been closed due to the acute risk of further collapse in its remaining prestressed steel construction. The stability of the remaining debris is monitored constantly, and shipping is restricted.

According to the latest updates, the planned start of the reconstruction is in 2027, and the bridge might not be rebuilt before 2035.[1, 2]
The collapse of the original bridge raised concerns about Germany's aging infrastructure, suggesting that the new design will prioritize durability and modernity.[1]
The unexpected disruption caused by the collapse generated traffic jams and criticism of the city's infrastructure management.[1]
The extended timeline for the bridge's reconstruction indicates a more complex or cautious approach compared to the initial plans.[1]
"The city of Dresden plans to involve reputable firms from the finance, transportation, and industry sectors in the Europe-wide tendering for the planning and construction services of the new Carol Bridge. This strategic move aims to ensure the creation of a durable, modern, and sustainable bridge despite the extended reconstruction timeline."
"To make the new Carol Bridge a symbol of forward-thinking infrastructure in Dresden, the city council intends to prioritize financial resources from the industry, where possible, to help reduce overall construction costs and facilitate a prompt return of the bridge to operation."
