Businesswoman Priya Sachdev Kapur at the Heart of Sona Group Controversy

Priya Sachdev Kapur, a prominent Indian-American businesswoman, has found herself at the centre of a high-stakes succession battle within the Sona Group, a ₹30,000-crore business empire.

Born on February 21, 1976, in New Delhi, India, to automobile dealer Ashok Sachdev, Priya Sachdev Kapur pursued her education in mathematics and business management at University College London (UCL) and briefly at UCLA. She began her professional journey in mergers and acquisitions at Credit Suisse First Boston in London.

After her early career, she returned to India and ventured into various sectors, including automotive retail, insurance, fashion, and e-commerce. Notable among her ventures are TSG International Marketing Pvt. Ltd. and Rock N Shop, one of India's early luxury e-commerce platforms, which she co-founded.

Priya Sachdev Kapur's personal life has also been a subject of interest. She was previously married to American hotelier Vikram Chatwal, with whom she had a daughter. The marriage ended in divorce in 2011 after a prolonged custody battle.

Later, Priya Sachdev Kapur married Sunjay Kapur, who was earlier married to actress Karishma Kapoor. Sunjay Kapur was a member of the Sona Group's founding family, and his death on June 12, 2022, due to a heart attack, has led to a succession battle within the family.

The controversy emerged when Rani Kapur, Sunjay’s mother and majority shareholder, sent a letter to the Sona Group board alleging that she was compelled to sign documents without explanation after Sunjay’s death. The letter hinted at certain people, implicitly including Priya Sachdev Kapur, of falsely representing the family to influence the succession and control of the business.

Priya Sachdev Kapur is now a non-executive director at Sona Comstar and director at Aureus Investment. She also leads Aureus Polo, a team established by her late husband, Sunjay Kapur.

The Sona Group controversy has brought Priya Sachdev Kapur's role and intentions into the spotlight amidst legal and familial disputes. As the future of the Sona Group hangs in the balance, Priya Sachdev Kapur continues to navigate the complexities of business and family dynamics.
