Cable Plowing Speeds Up Power Line Construction in Bavaria
The construction of power lines, particularly the SuedOstLink and SuedLink projects, has faced protests due to the environmental impact of traditional open construction methods. However, a more efficient method, cable plowing, has shown promise in field tests and is being increasingly adopted.
The cable plowing method, which involves burying power cables underground, offers several advantages. It causes fewer interventions, reduces blocking times, and allows for faster renaturation of the land. A field test near Landshut demonstrated its precision and technical feasibility under certain soil conditions.
TenneT TSO GmbH has been instrumental in planning and approving the use of cable plowing for sections of SuedLink in Bavaria. This method is crucial for the energy transition, which requires new power lines to be built faster and with less environmental impact. In Bavaria alone, around 130 km of the total 700 km earth cable project will be constructed using this method.
Politics, associations, and property owners have requested the use of cable plowing for the SuedOstLink project in Bavaria. This 543 km long direct current line, expected to bring wind power from the north to the south by 2027, will benefit from this method's advantages. Currently, it is being used for 42 km of the SuedLink project in Bavaria, allowing the area to be used again immediately after laying.
After over a decade of planning and approval phases, the construction of SuedLink in Bavaria began in August.
The cable plowing method is set to significantly reduce the environmental impact of power line construction in Bavaria. Its use in the SuedOstLink and SuedLink projects is expected to accelerate the energy transition while minimizing disruption to agriculture and other land use.
