Capital acquisition of Neptun Salmo by Broodstock Capital aims for consolidation within the hatchery market.

In a strategic move to bolster Norway's aquaculture sector, Broodstock Capital, a Norwegian private equity firm, has acquired a majority interest in Neptun Salmo AS, a leading hatchery fish producer based in Namsos. This acquisition marks a significant push towards developing a leading independent hatchery platform in Norway.

Established in 1990, Neptun Salmo boasts over three decades of experience in hatchery fish production. The company currently operates modern land-based sites in Røyklibotn and Survik, with an additional facility featuring Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) technology having been opened in summer 2024.

Neptun Salmo's strategic growth plan, as outlined by CEO Anders Bjørkli, focuses on leveraging specialization and modernization in aquaculture hatchery production to drive industrialization and value chain optimization in Norway's seafood sector.

Key elements of the strategy include building on a solid platform of expertise and advanced technology, expanding production capacity and quality, focusing on specialization within the value chain, becoming an independent and strategic partner, and utilising capital and industry leadership to scale.

Broodstock Capital's investment will fund facility expansion and further growth via bolt-on acquisitions. The aim is to grow Neptun Salmo into a bigger and better enterprise, with partners from Broodstock Capital represented on Neptun’s board and an experienced industry advisor appointed as chairman, ensuring strong governance and strategic direction.

Neptun Salmo aims to be a key partner to post-smolt producers and traditional fish farmers across Norway, emphasising collaboration and integration within the aquaculture value chain to optimise production outcomes. The company expects to produce 5.4 million smolts in 2025, a significant increase from its current operations.

In 2024, Neptun Salmo opened a new facility featuring cutting-edge RAS technology, further enhancing its capabilities in hatchery production. The deal includes both the purchase of shares from existing owners and the injection of new capital.
