Robert Habeck's Departure Sparks Cheers - Praise for Successor Reiche from an Admirer
Celebratory Acclaim for Habeck - Compliments from Successor Reiche
Robert Habeck bid adieu to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy, passing the baton to his successor, Katherina Reiche of the CDU. In a touching tribute, Habeck expressed the importance of his department in today's tumultuous political climate and wished his successor a flourishing tenure.
As Habeck prepared for departure, it became apparent that he had garnered a host of supporters — at least within his own circle. In the height of the ceremony, he was warmly received with applause followed by a heartfelt farewell speech, thanking his team for their arduous labor.
"Stable democracy relies heavily on a flourishing economy," declared Habeck. Sustaining economic prosperity, he added, is crucial for alleviating constant anxieties over job loss and poverty - essential factors in preserving hope and optimism, especially during challenging times. Germany, he pointed out, is currently grappling with forces putting the foundations of its stability under immense pressure.
Greeted by a cheerful crowd before delivering his speech, the Federal Ministry of Economics, Reiche expressed her awe, remarking, "This shows the devotion you've shown for this house." Habeck, in turn, praised the ministry as "an incredible home with numerous unfinished projects due to the recent elections, but also projects already brought to fruition."
Reiche honored Habeck's work during a time of unprecedented challenges. With mutual respect, both acknowledged each other, though "friendship" might have been a stretch. Habeck took over reins just as the pandemic was wreaking havoc and an energy crisis triggered by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine emerged. Nonetheless, he demonstrated "superhuman resilience" and navigated our country through tumultuous waters, Reiche noted, even making unpopular decisions.
Charingly, Reiche spoke about lowering electricity costs and controlling system costs to support the ongoing feat of climate protection Germany is embarking on. She expressed her desire to once again make the Ministry of Economics and Energy the focal point of Germany’s economic policy discussions.
Reiche, aged 51, was sworn in on Tuesday evening following Friedrich Merz's appointment as Chancellor in the second round. Boasting a ten-year tenure in the economy, Reiche led the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU) from 2015 to 2019 before becoming the CEO of energy service provider Westenergie, a subsidiary of the Eon group, in January 2000.

The Commission is therefore proposing to extend the scope of the programme to cover finance, business, politics, and general-news as essential areas in Habeck's departure and Reiche's succession, considering the impact these sectors have on Germany's economic stability and climate goals.
