China Assembles World's Largest Floating Offshore Wind Turbine
China has successfully assembled the world's largest single-unit floating offshore wind power system. The 16-megawatt turbine, with a rotor diameter of 252 metres, is set to generate around 44.7 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually once operational.
The turbine, manufactured domestically, is mounted on a semi-submersible platform equipped with China's first dynamic ballast system. It was assembled in Beihai, Guangxi, and will be towed offshore for installation and testing before grid connection and commercial operation.
The rotor spans an area equivalent to seven soccer pitches. All key parts of the system were produced in China, demonstrating the country's growing capabilities in renewable energy technology.
This significant achievement marks a milestone for China's offshore wind industry. The system's expected annual electricity generation is sufficient to power approximately 15,000 households, contributing to the country's clean energy targets.
