Chinese Imports of Specific Products Faced Additional Tax in India
India has taken a significant step in protecting its domestic industries by imposing anti-dumping duties on various products imported from China and other countries. The move comes as a response to cheap imports that have been affecting several sectors, including chemicals, metals, plastics, and solar glass.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has finalized anti-dumping duties on solar glass imports, setting the rate at approximately $658–$664 per MT for China, and roughly USD 570–664 per MT from other sources. Duties on Soft Ferrite Cores can reach up to 35% of the CIF value (Cost, Insurance, and Freight), while several duties are imposed in specific monetary terms per tonne, such as Vacuum Insulated Flasks at USD 1,732/MT.
Plastic processing machines have duties ranging from 27% to 63% depending on product specifics. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs has imposed a duty for a period of five years on imports of Soft Ferrite Cores, vacuum insulated flask, and TrichloroIsocyanuric Acid from China.
Other products subjected to anti-dumping duties include water treatment chemicals like TrichloroIsocyanuric Acid, Poly Vinyl Chloride Paste Resin, and aluminium foil. The duty on aluminium foil is up to $873 per tonne for six months.
The Election Commission of India has stated that 67.4 lakh people are not on the voters' rolls for the Bihar polls, which is unrelated to the trade policies but a significant development in the Indian political landscape.
India's decision to impose anti-dumping duties is aimed at ensuring fair trading practices and creating a level-playing field for domestic producers. This action is in line with the multilateral regime of the World Trade Organisation. The trade deficit between India and China stood at $85 billion in 2023-24, highlighting the need for such measures to safeguard domestic industries.
It is important to note that China is the second largest trading partner of India. However, these duties are not intended to harm bilateral relations but to protect domestic players from cheap imports from China. The move aligns with India's commitment to building a high-scoring, solid partnership with the UK, among other nations.
The duties were imposed following recommendations from the commerce ministry's investigation arm, the directorate general of trade remedies. India has previously imposed anti-dumping duties on several products to tackle cheap imports from various countries, including China. This list reflects recent 2025 official actions up to July and covers diverse product categories subjected to anti-dumping duties with a combination of ad valorem rates and specific duties as imposed by India.
