The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has announced the appointment of Professor Christopher Bones as its new Chair of the Board of Trustees, effective immediately. Bones will take over from Valerie Hughes D'Aeth, who has held the role since 2021.

In his new position, Bones will lead the CIPD's Board of Trustees in overseeing the strategic direction of the organisation. He will focus on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI), labor market changes, and regulation, and work to advance the CIPD through the new era of work.

Bones brings a wealth of experience to the role, having held senior HR leader roles in Diageo and Cadbury, co-founded and led a digital company analyzing consumer insights, and served as Dean of Henley Business School since 2004. In 2002, he became a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD.

As Chair, Bones will focus on shaping the future of work, understanding how AI transforms workforce needs, and supporting HR professionals to lead these changes effectively within organisations. He emphasises the importance of helping organisations adapt to AI's impact on skills and roles while promoting responsible and ethical use of technology.

Bones' strategic direction aims to build the confidence and capabilities of HR professionals to work closely with business strategy, championing better work and working lives amid the evolving demands of the profession shaped by AI.

Chloe Smith, CIPD President, expressed gratitude for Valerie Hughes D'Aeth's leadership and commitment as Chair. Hughes D'Aeth's tenure has seen the organisation's growth to over 160,000 members internationally. Her strategic insight and passion for the CIPD's mission have shaped the organisation's direction.

Hughes D'Aeth is stepping down to spend more time with her family, but will continue to be passionate about the profession. Her legacy includes growing the CIPD's reach and influence across the profession and in the wider world of work.

In addition, Bones is a former winner of the UK Management Book of the Year for "The Cult of the Leader". More information on the CIPD Board of Trustees and its governance can be found on the CIPD website.
