CIPD selects Professor Christopher Bones for the position of Chair of the Board of Trustees
New CIPD Chair Christopher Bones Focuses on AI and Future of Work
Christopher Bones has been appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the professional body for HR and people development. Bones, a chartered fellow of the CIPD and former dean of Henley Business School, will oversee the strategic direction of the CIPD amid the evolving demands and opportunities faced by the HR profession.
Bones' focus will be on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the future of work and the development of necessary skills for the HR profession. He aims to build the confidence and capabilities of HR professionals so they can work at the heart of business strategy while supporting workforce needs.
In a statement, Bones emphasized the importance of championing better work and working lives during this transformative period for HR. He sees AI not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity for the profession to make a real difference to organizations and people by integrating technology thoughtfully into HR practices.
Bones brings extensive experience in HR, having held senior roles at Diageo and Cadbury. He is also an entrepreneur and co-founded a digital company analyzing consumer insights. In 2002, he became a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, and from 2004, he was Dean of Henley Business School, becoming the first non-academic leader of the school.
Bones succeeds Valerie Hughes D'Aeth, who has held the role since 2021. Hughes D'Aeth has stepped down from her role to spend more time with her family but will continue to be passionate about the profession and remains a part of the CIPD community.
The CIPD's Board of Trustees expresses gratitude to Valerie Hughes D'Aeth for her leadership during a critical period, including steering the organization through the Covid-19 pandemic and strategic investment in digital and organizational transformation. Chloe Smith, CIPD President, appreciates Valerie's leadership and commitment as Chair since 2021, acknowledging her strategic insight and passion for the CIPD's mission as crucial in shaping the organization's direction and readiness for a rapidly changing world of work.
Under Hughes D'Aeth's leadership, the CIPD experienced significant growth, including an increase in membership to over 160,000 members internationally and a broader reach and influence across the profession and the world of work.
