City of Halle (Saale) denounces state government for lacking transparency in distributing 2.61 billion euros in funding, with the city receiving the least allocation per capita.
In the heart of Saxony-Anhalt, a debate has been brewing over the distribution of resources and funding between the cities of Halle and Magdeburg. Residents of Halle have been expressing concerns about what they perceive as an unfair advantage given to Magdeburg by the state government.
At the centre of this dispute is Alexander Vogt, a prominent figure in Halle, who argues that the city can finance all transferred mandatory tasks through its municipal budget. However, the real problem, according to Vogt, lies with voluntary services like TOOH, which are becoming an increasing burden for the city.
Vogt's statements have been met with criticism from some quarters. He has been accused of ignoring the fact that people in the districts also have the right to expect equal living conditions in their regions. Another user, Pauli, has also been called out for similar oversight, as he too seems to disregard the rights of the people in Neustadt.
Vogt's assertion that the Bund and Land overburden municipalities has been labelled a falsehood by some. The city administration of Halle, along with Vogt, has criticised the state government for the distribution of 2.61 billion euros in funding, with Halle receiving less than its actual population according to the city's registration office. Halle currently receives approximately 511 euros per capita in funding, which is lower than its actual population of around 245,000.
The state government, on the other hand, bases its distribution key for funding on population (75%) and area (25%). However, residents and city officials in Halle complain that the state transfers responsibilities without sufficient funding, and political groups like the CDU and SPD advocate for measures such as more citizen participation, environmental assessments, and economic relief to strengthen Halle's financial situation.
The city of Halle also takes on tasks and functions for the surrounding area and the entire country, a fact that Vogt has acknowledged. Yet, the state capital is accused of treating Halle out of pure spite, with some questioning why Halle is being hindered compared to Magdeburg.
As the debate continues, it is clear that the residents of Halle are seeking equal treatment and resources from the state government. The question remains, will Magdeburg continue to be preferred under the current state government, or will Halle finally receive the funding it deserves?
