Closure of branches owned by Baumarkt-Riese: the specified locations in Bavaria to cease operations
In a series of moves aimed at restructuring the company, BayWa AG has announced permanent closures and clearance sales for several of its Bau- und Gartenmarkets in Bavaria. However, the exact number of location closures and job losses resulting from the restructuring plan has yet to be disclosed.
The Munich Local Court has confirmed the restructuring plan, which includes loan extensions until December 31, 2028, and a potential capital increase of up to €201.6 million to strengthen the company's equity foundation. The restructuring concept also includes a reduction of 1,300 full-time jobs [1].
Two Bau- und Gartenmarkets in Neu-Ulm and Straubing, located in Lower Bavaria, will close by the end of the year. The clearance sale at these markets has already begun and is being advertised with signs. The clearance sale will continue until autumn, offering everything at reduced prices, with the slogan "Everything reduced, everything must go" [2].
The closures affect both agricultural and building materials locations. Several agricultural warehouses, including those in Ingolstadt, Regensburg, Aschaffenburg, Würzburg, Nuremberg, and Landshut, have already closed or will close on unspecified dates. Similarly, building materials locations in cities such as Fürth, Augsburg, Munich, and Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz have also closed or will close [3].
In addition to the 12 locations that have already closed in Bavaria, four more closures are expected to follow. The company has not revealed the locations of these forthcoming closures.
BayWa AG's financial struggles became apparent last year when the company reported a billion-dollar loss of 1.6 billion euros [4]. Despite these challenges, the company remains a sister company of Hellweg Die Profi-Baumärkte GmbH & Co. KG, which does not belong to BayWa AG but operates the Bau-märkte chain [5].
It is essential to note that while the operational impacts of BayWa AG's restructuring plan have yet to be fully disclosed, the company is moving forward with its restructuring efforts, including the permanent closures and clearance sales of several Bau- und Gartenmarkets in Bavaria.
