Comcast Speeds Ahead: DOCSIS 4.0 Brings Symmetric Gigabit Speeds to US

A recent search for information about a company in Berlin offering symmetric bandwidths up to 5 Gbit/s yielded no results. Meanwhile, Comcast in the US has been making strides with its DOCSIS 4.0 Full Duplex (FDX) upgrade, promising faster and more reliable networks for its customers.

In Germany, cable customers currently enjoy upload speeds of up to 50 Mbit/s from Vodafone and 30 Mbit/s from Tele Columbus. To achieve symmetric bandwidths of up to 5 Gbit/s, a fiber optic connection is required. DOCSIS 4.0, however, enables such symmetrical bandwidths in the gigabit range, offering up to 10 Gbit/s download and 6 Gbit/s upload.

Comcast, the largest cable provider in the US, initially planned to connect 50 million households with DOCSIS 4.0 by 2025. However, this goal has since been revised. The company began rolling out DOCSIS 4.0 in its networks under 'Project Genesis' three years ago, and has since made progress in offering symmetrical bandwidths across all 39 states it operates in. Next year, Comcast plans to introduce internet tariffs with symmetrical speeds of 3 and 5 Gbit/s.

While German cable customers await faster upload speeds, Comcast in the US continues to advance its DOCSIS 4.0 technology, promising symmetrical gigabit speeds to more households in the near future.
