Osnabrück: SWO Netz Enhances City Centre Power Grid for Energy Transition
Starting from May 19, the walled section of Kollegienwall in Osnabrück's city centre will undergo an expansion project by SWO Netz, the city utility's subsidiary network. The initiative aims to prepare the power grid for the energy transition.
In the coming weeks, the company will double the capacity of the power line connecting Kollegienwall and Johannisfreiheit transformer stations. This move follows an increase in local solar power systems, heat pumps, and electric vehicle charging facilities, which are stretching the current network's capacity.
Construction work will mainly focus on the side of Kollegienwall, necessitating a lane closure for the pedestrian crossing and safety distances. As a result, the road will remain a one-way street leading outward from the city, due to a nearby high-rise construction site. Navigating both Kollegienwall and Detmarstraße will be required during construction, which is expected to take place predominantly at night.
In light of these changes, bus services on lines 13/381/382 and 383 heading towards Neumarkt will bypass Voxtrup and head directly to the main station. Meanwhile, lines N18 and N381 will follow an alternate route via Goethering and Wittekindstraße to reach Neumarkt. Completion of the work is anticipated by August.
SWO Netz's initiatives reflect its role in shaping Osnabrück's energy infrastructure, focusing on grid expansion, renewable energy integration, smart grid technologies, and electric vehicle electrification. While temporary construction-related traffic disruptions are likely, the long-term benefits include a cleaner environment, improved efficiency, and more sustainable energy and transportation systems.
