Construction Progress Update: An Aerial View of the LRT Line's Development (Image)
Breaking News:
Astana's LRT Line On Track, With 25% Completion Achieved
It's full steam ahead for Astana's Light Metro (LRT) line as City Transportation Systems (CTS) announces the completion of 25% of the upper structure. Progress reports indicate that 5.6 kilometers of the planned 22.4-kilometer double-track line has been laid.
Equipped for Top Performance
The construction site buzzes with the presence of specialized machinery, including a maneuvering tractor, rail excavator, concrete mixer with a pump, a console crane, and platforms, all geared up to get the job done. CTS has also highlighted the use of an innovative rail fixing system, DTVII2-1, which boasts a reduction in noise and vibration levels by up to 10 dB. This noise-reducing system is said to offer high durability and adaptability, making it an ideal choice for the project.
A Winter Weather Test Run
In the past year, the first 500 meters of track were laid on the section of the overpass between stations No 116 and No 117. This trial run helped assess the impact of winter weather conditions on the upper structure of the LRT track.
A Long Road to Completion
The journey of Astana's LRT line has been marked by delays. Severe funding issues and a corruption scandal that saw the embezzlement of 5.8 billion tenge ($13 million) through inflated contracts slowed down the project for years. However, construction resumed in 2023 under President Tokayev’s directive, with test runs scheduled to begin in September 2024.
The LRT line is expected to connect Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport and Astana Nurly Zhol station and will have a total of 19 four-section trains equipped with monitors and cameras, each capable of seating 650 passengers. While testing is underway, the hunt continues for individuals linked to the past embezzlement.
