Construction Project at Alicenbrücke, Mainz: guidelines for its progression

The tram track relay project on Alicenbrücke in Mainz, Germany, is currently underway and is scheduled to be completed by August 12, 2025. This significant infrastructure development has resulted in some temporary traffic and public transport restrictions on the bridge.

As previously reported, only one lane is available for traffic in both directions on the Alicenbrücke. The concrete of the bridge has been inspected for damage, and fortunately, the results were unremarkable, requiring no further measures. The inspection ensured the safety of the bridge during the construction period.

The work on the tracks includes the insertion of switch and double-track sections, the removal of old tram tracks, and the adjustment of the overhead lines. The transition structure on the tracks has been rebuilt since June. The West Main Station has been connected to new tram tracks from the Münsterplatz since July 7.

In the meantime, only buses on lines 62, 63, 67, 69, 76, and 92 will stop at the Main Station again at the regular stops. Temporary stops have been set up at the West Main Station and the Main Station for these buses and replacement tram services. Jens Grützner, spokesperson for the Mainz city works, confirmed that the work is proceeding "almost according to plan."

The good news is that from August 18, two lanes in both directions on the Alicenbrücke could be reopened, easing the traffic congestion. However, public transport restrictions will still be in place on the Alicenbrücke, as work on the tracks is scheduled to be completed only by the end of October.

Once the work is completed, the full traffic and public transport restrictions are expected to be lifted on August 12, 2025, when the construction work finishes, and the bridge reopens for regular use. Until then, passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and allow extra time for travel.

The completion of this project will undoubtedly improve the public transport infrastructure in Mainz, making travel more efficient and convenient for its residents and visitors. Stay tuned for further updates on the progress of this project.

The tram track relay project, part of Mainz's broader transportation sector, is ongoing and has caused temporary restrictions in both traffic and public transit on Alicenbrücke. This project, which involves the insertion of switch and double-track sections, the removal of old tram tracks, and the adjustment of overhead lines, depends on finance from the city's industry sector to ensure its timely completion.
