The Piedmont Region in Italy is moving forward with the expansion of Simplified Logistic Zones (ZLS) to boost logistical and industrial development in North-West. By the end of July, other areas in the region will be deliberated by the Steering Committee, with the locations for hinterland logistics activities yet to be decided.

The Simplified Logistic Zone 'Port and Hinterland of Genoa' is one of the key tools for this development. The Steering Committee, responsible for overseeing its operations, has already been established, and the single window for productive activities has been launched for potential investors in the first ZLS cluster. This cluster, located in the Alessandrino area, consists of seven municipalities: Rivalta Scrivia, Arquata Scrivia, Novi Ligure, Alessandria, Castellazzo Bormida, Ovada, and Belforte Monferrato.

The operational start of the Steering Committee marks a significant step towards the region's logistical and industrial development. In April, the Steering Committee of the Simplified Logistic Zone 'Port and Hinterland of Genoa' was established. The first phase of the simplified logistic zones has already defined the perimeters in the artisanal and industrial areas of the first seven municipalities.

The single window processes practices, issues building permits, authorizations for expansions, renovations, and technological interventions related to ZLS with halved times. This facilitates a path for companies interested in investing in the territory, effectively halving bureaucratic procedures and making authorization processes faster.

The ultimate goal is to favour the creation of favourable conditions for new investments in port and hinterland areas connected to the transeuropean transport network (TEN-T) for North-West. To obtain accurate and up-to-date details about ZLS development in the Piedmont region, direct sources such as regional government publications, the Piedmont logistics authority, or official Italian infrastructure planning documents should be consulted.

The Piedmont Region's Infrastructure Assessor, Enrico Bussalino, is overseeing these initiatives as part of broader projects linked to the Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel and related rail and road schemes aimed at shifting freight transport modes for decarbonization and efficiency. Turin, anchoring the region’s logistics cluster, may be a focus for these municipal-level logistics projects. However, the precise status and timeline of ZLS expansion in Piedmont, as well as the involved municipalities, are not detailed in the retrieved information at this time.

By the end of July, the process for other locations that have applied to host hinterland logistics activities will start, bringing us one step closer to understanding the full scope of the ZLS expansion in the Piedmont Region.

  1. The Steering Committee, responsible for overseeing the operation of the Simplified Logistic Zone 'Port and Hinterland of Genoa', has launched a single window for productive activities in finance and transportation, attracting potential investors in the business sector.
  2. In the Piedmont Region, the expansion of Simplified Logistic Zones (ZLS) aims to boost not only logistical and industrial development but also the finance and transportation sectors, with other locations yet to be decided by the end of July.
