Bavaria Advocates for New Gas-Fired Power Plants and Accelerated Grid Expansion
Bavaria's Minister-President, Markus Söder (CSU), has called for the construction of new gas-fired power plants and the acceleration of grid expansion. This call was endorsed by the Association of Bavarian Business (vbw) and the grid operators.
In a departure from a long-standing CSU position, Söder did not express a preference for underground or overhead power lines for new projects. He emphasized that large power lines in the future should be built overhead.
Söder also proposed a special priority list for new connections to avoid long waiting times, specifically including certain companies and data centers. However, the available search results do not specify which firms or data centers are named on this priority list.
The Bavarian state government suggests that important industrial facilities and data centers should have priority in new grid connections. The CEO of vbw, Bertram Brossardt, emphasized the importance of prioritizing industry and data centers in new grid connections.
Currently, connections are made on a first-come-first-served basis. Operators of battery storage systems are often faster in receiving new connections. Söder stated that companies should not have to wait for years to receive new grid connections.
To expedite the process, Söder proposed that the approval period for grid expansion projects should not exceed two years. Bavaria has already introduced a "fast lane" for large grid expansion projects.
Moreover, Söder and Bavarian Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger emphasized the need for procedures for maintenance work on grid infrastructure to be accelerated. All the underground cables that have been decided on will remain, Söder assured.
The vbw and grid operators did not express any opposition to the call for new gas-fired power plants or the initiatives and proposals regarding grid expansion. Söder reaffirmed the need for accelerating grid expansion, stating that it is crucial for the core of digitalization.
