Controversial residential developments given green light by Cambridge city councilors
In a recent council meeting, the Eddeva Park project, a plan to construct 80 new homes near me off Babraham Road in Cambridge, received unanimous approval from the committee. The development company behind this project is This Land.
The Eddeva Park project includes more than just new homes for sale. Plans also include a central square and a wildflower area. The main spine road for the project was approved in 2022, and work is scheduled to start immediately.
Cllr Katie Porrer, a member of the council, proposed an idea to install an electricity supply in the community square to prevent the use of diesel generators for pop-up events. However, no further information about this electricity supply installation was provided.
The council's policy requires all flat roofs to be biodiverse unless there are accessibility reasons why they cannot be. However, concerns were raised about the fact that only 45% of the flat roofs in the Eddeva Park project are biodiverse. Cllr Porrer questioned why this percentage is not higher, and Cllr Martin Smart shared her concern.
Despite these concerns, the committee councillors voted in favour of the Eddeva Park project plans. It's worth noting that of the 80 new properties in the project, 40% will be designated as affordable housing to help locals during the current cost-of-living crisis.
Adaptations were made to the design of some homes in the Eddeva Park project after initial concerns were raised. These adaptations included the amount of space offered in some gardens and space required for bin lorries to pass through.
However, Cllr Porrer also expressed concern about the size of gardens in the Eddeva Park project. The development group behind the plan to build 80 new apartments as part of the Eddeva Park project is BPD.
Initially, approval was granted in 2021 for up to 230 homes to be built on the Eddeva Park site. However, the number of homes was later reduced to 80. No details were given about the reasons for this reduction.
Despite the concerns raised, the Eddeva Park project is moving forward. The community is eager to see the progress and the impact it will have on the local area.
