Customs Raid Finds Wage, Social Security and Employment Irregularities in Hotel Industry
On Friday, September 19, 2025, the Financial Control Black Work (FKS) of the Customs Service conducted nationwide inspections in the hotel and catering industry. The Main Customs Office Bielefeld, led by Arnd Hilwig, participated with 63 officers. The inspections aimed to ensure compliance with the legal minimum wage, social security obligations, and to uncover improper receipt of social benefits and illegal employment.
During the inspections, 250 employees were questioned, and irregularities were found in 96 cases. On-site, 12 administrative offense proceedings and 4 criminal proceedings were initiated. The irregularities included 79 cases of minimum wage violations, 7 cases of suspected social security contribution evasion, and 3 cases of illegal employment of foreigners. The general minimum wage has been 12.82 euros per hour since January 1, 2025.
The Customs Service focuses on this industry due to its size and employment regulations. Subsequent checks will be carried out by comparing employee data with company records to ensure all workers receive their legal entitlements.
The inspections resulted in 12 administrative and 4 criminal proceedings. The findings highlight the need for continued vigilance in ensuring fair wages and social security contributions. The Customs Service remains committed to combating black work in the hotel and catering industry.
