Customs Raid in Hotel Industry Finds 96 Minimum Wage Violations

Customs officers conducted inspections in the hotel and catering industry on Friday, September 19, 2025. The Main Customs Office Bielefeld, led by Arnd Hilwig, participated with 63 officers. They checked employment conditions and ensured compliance with the legal minimum wage and social security obligations.

The inspections, part of the Financial Control Black Work's (FKS) risk-oriented strategy, covered 250 employees. Irregularities were found in 96 cases, including 79 minimum wage violations, seven suspected withholding of social security contributions, and three cases of illegal employment of foreigners. Twelve administrative offense proceedings and four criminal proceedings were initiated on the spot.

The hotel and catering industry, one of the largest and most employment-intensive sectors under the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG), was the focus. Since January 1, 2025, the general minimum wage is 12.82 euros per hour. Follow-up inspections were conducted to compare employee data with payroll and financial accounting of the hotels near me.

The inspections, led by the Main Customs Office Bielefeld, uncovered significant irregularities in the hotel and catering industry. Customs' role in securing social systems and state revenues was highlighted, ensuring fair employment and competitive conditions. Further investigations are ongoing following the inspections.
