Customs Raid Uncovers 30 Cases of Labour and Benefit Fraud in Hotel Industry
On Friday, September 19, 2025, a nationwide sweep was conducted in the hotel and catering industry by the Financial Control Schwarzarbeit (FKS) of the customs. The operation, involving 51 customs officers and other authorities, aimed to ensure compliance with minimum wage laws and detect various forms of labour and benefit fraud.
A total of 133 individuals were questioned during the inspections, which uncovered several suspected violations. Ten cases of underpayment of the minimum wage were detected, with the current rate set at 12.82 euros gross per hour since January 1, 2025. Additionally, seven cases of wage withholding and misappropriation were found.
The inspections also revealed 14 cases of illegal employment of foreigners and nine instances of benefit fraud. Notably, one person was discovered with a forged passport during the checks. The search results did not provide the name of the head of the communication department of the Hauptzollamt Braunschweig responsible for clarifying questions about the mentioned controls.
The targeted inspections resulted in a total of 30 suspected cases of labour and benefit fraud. The FKS, along with other authorities, will now investigate these cases further to ensure compliance with labour laws and social security obligations.
