Customs Seize €150k in Luxury Goods, Launch Money Laundering Probe
A routine vehicle check at the Dettelbach customs office uncovered a significant haul of untaxed luxury goods, including gold jewelry and designer sunglasses, with a total value of over 150,000 euros. The discovery has led to a money laundering suspect and a criminal investigation.
The goods, which included ten packs of untaxed tobacco, were attributed to a 30-year-old Romanian driver. Customs officers from Schweinfurt, working with traffic police from Aschaffenburg, made the seizure on May 3rd in the Aschaffenburg area. The BMW X5 with German registration was found to contain gold jewelry worth over 100,000 euros and around 160 designer sunglasses valued at over 50,000 euros, bearing logos of well-known luxury brands.
The subsequent investigation, led by the customs investigation office in Frankfurt am Main and coordinated with the public prosecutor's office in Aschaffenburg, has revealed a potential tax evasion amount of around 34,000 euros. The Romanian driver is suspected of money laundering, although their identity has not been disclosed.
The seizure of high-value, untaxed luxury items and smuggled cigarettes has resulted in a criminal investigation against the Romanian driver. The investigation is ongoing, with the aim of determining the source of the goods and any potential links to money laundering activities.
