Customs Unit Uncovers 20M Euro Black Work in 2023
The Main Customs Office Potsdam, active across multiple districts and cities, concluded a busy year in 2023 with its Financial Control Black Work. The unit primarily targeted the construction industry, hotels and catering, and building cleaning sectors, uncovering significant illicit activities.
In 2023, the inspections resulted in a staggering damage sum of over 20 million euros, a substantial increase from the previous year. Despite a decrease in the number of employers and individuals inspected, the financial impact of the uncovered offences grew significantly. This increase reflects the severity of the cases discovered.
The investigations led to severe penalties, with courts imposing fines totaling 377,741 euros and imprisonment of 24 months. Additionally, the Financial Control Black Work issued warning fines, fines, and confiscation orders worth 530,370 euros. The unit also initiated 2,128 criminal proceedings and 568 administrative offence proceedings. The damage sum comprised unpaid social security contributions, unpaid professional association fees, improperly received social benefits, and wage discrepancies.
The Main Customs Office Potsdam's efforts in 2023 highlight the ongoing battle against black work, illegal employment, and social benefit fraud. Despite a decrease in the number of inspections, the increase in the damage sum underscores the importance of their work in protecting legitimate businesses and ensuring fair competition.
