Cyprus Empowers Citizens and Local Authorities in Energy Sector
Cyprus is set to empower its citizens and local authorities in the energy sector. The Promotion and Encouragement of the Use of Renewable Energy Sources Law has been amended, allowing municipalities and community councils to establish or join citizen energy communities. This move aims to reduce electricity prices and promote renewable energy.
The bill, sponsored by Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis, received support from various political parties. Chrysis Pantelides and Panikos Leonidou of DIKO both underlined the significance of opening the competitive electricity market. Michalis Giakoumis of DIPA highlighted the potential for citizens to access cheaper electricity through these communities.
Local authorities can now participate in renewable energy communities, forming non-profit companies limited by guarantee. Aristos Damianou of AKEL welcomed the proposals, seeing them as a step toward empowering citizens in environmental and energy challenges.
With the new law, municipalities and community councils in Cyprus can now join or establish citizen energy communities. This move is expected to foster local governance, reduce electricity prices, and promote the use of renewable energy sources.
