Delay in the Modernization of Oldenburg's Classic Train Station
Delay in Completion of Oldenburg's Train Station Renovation Extends Project Duration by Two Years - Delay in Completion of Oldenburg's Railway Station Stretches to Two Additional Years
Alright, buckle up! You're about to hear some bad news for train enthusiasts in Oldenburg. The revamp of the historic train hall at its main station is getting delayed by a whopping two years, mates. Originally, ol' Deutsche Bahn (DB) had planned to spruce up the only remaining historic train hall in Lower Saxony by the end of 2027. But, due to an unexpected twist, the work is now expected to be done by the end of 2029. Don't be surprised if you see some platform closures during the construction period.
First built in 1915, the train hall of the station structure is quite the vintage beauty. However, the joints and steel beams of this bad boy are showing some serious wear and tear, leading to the renovation since last year. A steel construction firm based in Leer's Westoverledingen is hard at work, creating the new steel beams for this project.
The disappointing news
DB's project manager, Felix Burckhardt, confirmed the grim findings. Severe corrosion damage was detected during inspections on the steel components of the hall ship at platform 7/8. The damage is particularly severe at the connection points and in areas that were previously covered by attachments. This means that the repair work for the other two hall ships over the tracks 3/4 and 5/6 will take longer than anticipated.
DB is investing around 80 million euros in the revitalization of the train hall. Despite the longer renovation time, the spending plan ain't gonna change, as per a DB spokesperson. Most of the dough will go towards dismantling, refurbishing, and reinstalling the three hall ships, including the glass roofs and supporting elements.
What Oldenburg hopes for
The future of the listed building has been up in the air for quite a while, as DB had considered axing the Jugendstil and Heimatstil-style hall and replacing it with individual platform roofs due to cost considerations. Each day, around 25,000 passengers pass through the station, which is owned by DB.
Oldenburg's chief building officer, Christine-Petra Schacht, expects that once the renovations are complete, Oldenburg will be flaunting one a damn pretty spectacular main train station, boasting one of the most beautiful and charming main stations in the republic! Schacht regards the two-year delay as unfortunate but understandable in light of unanticipated steel beam damage.
According to DB's renovation plan, the hall ship at platforms 5/6 will be the first to be completed, no later than mid-2027. Other projects are also in the works. For example, the foundations of the hall ship 7/8 are currently being revamped. Disassembly of the hall ship 3/4 is scheduled to start later this summer. During the renovation process, platform 5/6 will be extended by around 50 meters.- Oldenburg- Renovation- Train Station- DB- Lower Saxony- Deutsche Bahn- Leer
During the renovation of Oldenburg's train station, Delayed by two years, the investment of around 80 million euros will not change despite the setback. Simultaneously, Oldenburg's community aims to utilize this time for additional initiatives, such as providing community aid and vocational training opportunities for locals in related industries like finance, transportation, and construction, particularly in the field of vocational training for the refurbishment of the train station.
