Delhi Minister Announces Possible Waive of Large Water Bills

Hey there! Let's talk about the latest updates in Delhi's water supply scene.

Parvesh Verma, the Delhi cabinet minister, announced a groundbreaking move: a bill waiver scheme to slash domestic bill payments by up to 90% for residents facing delays in payment. While the previous government reported a staggering ₹5,737 crore in unpaid bills by 1.17 million consumers, it seems this issue won't be ignored any longer. However, it remains unclear how the waiver will be distributed fairly among all consumers, especially those who have been prompt with their payments.

Verma also highlighted that the billing system is getting an overhaul. New software is being developed to weed out technical problems, ensuring accurate billing for everyone. He unveiled the "One City, One Control Room, One Number" integrated control system to better handle water-related issues. The new system promises to rationalize water distribution based on population in each constituency.

Illegal water tapping has been a significant concern, but the government has vowed to stamp it out. They are also working on a new sewer master plan to strengthen Delhi's infrastructure. A global tender will be issued for the plan's development. The government aims to provide sewer lines to all unauthorized colonies by 2027, marking the first time such a comprehensive commitment has been made with a clear deadline.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has continually worked on improving the water supply system and infrastructure. They have launched several rebate schemes and announced five amnesties over the past 12 years. Additionally, the government has taken strides to address waterlogging problems by installing extra pumps and desilting drains as part of their first 100 days in power.
