Destruction of the old district government building
The KulturIntegrationsQuartier (KiQ), currently based in Hammerhütte on Koblenzer Straße, is set to relocate to a new home in Siegen's Tiergartenstraße. The former Kreiswehrersatzamt, a historic building, will undergo a comprehensive renovation and repurposing to accommodate the cultural and integration center.
The project, which aims to preserve the building's cultural heritage while adapting it for contemporary use, includes modern infrastructure upgrades to support KiQ's cultural and social activities. The relocation is scheduled to take place after the completion of primary construction and refurbishment works.
The right part of the former Kreiswehrersatzamt will become the new home of the KiQ, while the left part will be replaced with a new construction. This new building will house a kindergarten and twelve apartments. The middle part of the building, meanwhile, will be renovated to accommodate up to 200 refugees, serving as a "buffer" for potential increases in refugee numbers, according to Wolfgang Cavelius.
Asbestos removal is currently underway at the former Kreiswehrersatzamt to ensure the safety of the renovation process. The demolition of a building part is also ongoing, but it does not affect the middle part where the refugee accommodation will be located.
The demolition and construction works are expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with the aim of moving the KiQ to its new location in Tiergartenstraße thereafter. The renovated building will not only serve as a cultural and integration center but will also contribute to the city's urban landscape, providing a unique blend of history and modernity.
Around 25 volunteer clubs and groups currently use the KiQ building as an event venue, and it is expected that this community will continue to thrive in its new location. For precise architectural plans, milestones, and detailed scheduling, local municipal announcements or KiQ official communications would be the most authoritative sources.
The renovation project for the former Kreiswehrersatzamt, upon its completion, will host not only the KiQ but also a kindergarten and twelve apartments in the new construction. With the purpose of serving as a buffer for potential increases in refugee numbers, the middle part of the building will be refurbished to provide accommodation for up to 200 refugees. This transformation, combining historical heritage with contemporary needs, could create new opportunities in the real-estate market, potentially attracting investors. Furthermore, the radio broadcasting equipment required for KiQ's cultural and social activities might find a suitable space among the modern infrastructure upgrades in the renovated building.
